The first contest of season 2007 was scheduled on the 22nd till 25th of March in Tarifa. There were all the good riders registered for the competition. With the names like Andre Paskowski, Normen Gunzlein and Cheo Diaz it was going to be very exiting beginning of the new season. There were 24 riders inscribed.
The first day of the competition was quite boring as there was no wind at all. Unfortunately the forecast was really bad and no one really believed in the wind for the next days.
Second day stared as usual with sun and no wind. Around noon the wind changed direction and started increasing. Around 1 pm few riders were already planning with five meter sails. At 2 pm the decision was to start the first heat. My first opponent was a local rider from Tarifa. I have to admit that the conditions were pretty difficult because of the big chop and light wind. That was my first heat and here I was about to see if a two months training in South Africa was any good. I was sailing quite good an I won the first heat and then two more to meet Andre Paskowski in the final. On the way to the final I’ve beaten Bonnef from Spain, Michael Sumereder from Austria and Normen Gunzlein from Germany. The final itself would be very good but I made a big mistake and I’ve lost 1.5 minute of the heat. I tried to fight my way back but the amount of moves which Andre did when I wasn’t on the water was just too big. In the end I had to b satisfied with the second place.
The results after the first single elimination were like this:
1. Andre Paskowski F2, North Sails
2. Jakub Kosmowski Tabou, Gaastra
3. Cheo Diaz Fanatic, North Sails
4. Normen Gunzlein JP, Neilpryde
On Saturday morning it was looking exactly the same as on the two first days. We were waiting for whole day but unfortunately the wind didn’t kick in so we had no heats.
Sunday didn’t bring any results as well. The results after the single elimination were also the official result of the first event here in Tarifa.
All in all it was a good contest for me. I’m quite happy about the second place in the beginning of the season. I could be even better without that mistake in the final. Now I can see that 3 years competing in EFPT now pays off. I hope we going to have more wind in the next competitions and I will be able to fight for good positions later in the season.
